That\u2019s why <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/jesus\/\">Jesus<\/a>\u00a0generally seeks solitude to pray, and why the nation of <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/jewschildren-of-israel\/\">Israel<\/a> is often described as \u201cdwelling alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When \u201calone\u201d is used in reference to ownership \u2013 when something is \u201chis and his alone\u201d \u2013 the meaning is more literal.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Passages from Swedenborg<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Arcana Coelestia (Elliott) n. 139<\/b><\/p>\n<ol start=\"139\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In ancient times those who were guided as celestial people by the Lord were said &#8216;to dwell\u00a0alone&#8217;, for the reason that evil forces, or evil spirits, were infesting them no longer. This was also represented in the Jewish Church by their dwelling\u00a0aloneafter the nations had been driven out. For this reason several times in the Word the Lord&#8217;s Church is described as &#8216;alone&#8217;, as in Jeremiah,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rise up, go up against a nation at ease that dwells securely. It has no gates or bars; they dwell\u00a0alone. Jer. 49:31.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the prophecy of Moses,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Israel dwelt securely,\u00a0alone. Deut. 33:28.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0And plainer still in Balaam&#8217;s prophecy,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0See, a people, it dwells\u00a0alone, and is not reckoned among the nations. Num. 23:9.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Here &#8216;nations&#8217; stands for evils. These descendants of the Most Ancient Church did not wish to dwell\u00a0alone; they did not wish to be a celestial man, that is, to be guided as a celestial man by the Lord, but to be among the nations, as also did the Jewish Church. And since this was what they desired it is said, &#8216;It is not good that the man should be\u00a0alone&#8217;. Indeed when this is what a person desires, he is already under the influence of evil, and his wish is granted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Arcana Coelestia (Elliott) n. 8168<\/b><\/p>\n<ol start=\"8168\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8216;Leave us\u00a0alone, and let us serve the Egyptians&#8217; means that they would not be drawn back from surrendering themselves. This is clear from the meaning of &#8216;leaving us\u00a0alone&#8217;, when said with regard to molestations, as not preventing and not drawing back; and from the meaning of &#8216;serving the Egyptians&#8217; as giving themselves up, like those who have been vanquished, to those who molest by means of falsities, thus that they would surrender themselves.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Swedenborg says that being\u00a0alone in the Bible represents being free of evil and false influences.
