{"id":10416,"date":"2015-04-07T18:59:27","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T18:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/?page_id=10416"},"modified":"2015-04-07T18:59:27","modified_gmt":"2015-04-07T18:59:27","slug":"swedenborg","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/societies.newchurch.org\/wordstudy\/about\/swedenborg\/","title":{"rendered":"Emanuel Swedenborg: Who He Was; Why He Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pg-10416-0\"  class=\"panel-grid\" ><div class=\"panel-grid-core\"><div id=\"pgc-10416-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell \" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #993300;\">The ideas on this site are drawn from the works of Emanuel Swedenborg,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an 18<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th-<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">century Swedish scholar who spent his last three decades writing\u00a0about the meaning of <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/the-bible\/\">the Bible<\/a> and the nature of <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/the-lord\/\">God<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/human\/\">humanity<\/a>, reality and <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/heaven-and-hell\/\">life after de<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/heaven-and-hell\/\">ath<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/about\/swedenborg\/swedenborgs-biography\/\">Swedenborg<\/a> (1688-1772) said he received revelation from the Lord, and that he wrote what he did at the Lord\u2019s behest. He also said he was able to visit heaven and hell and talk to <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/angels\/\">people<\/a> there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/emanuel-swedenborg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10532 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/emanuel-swedenborg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a>Critics have claimed that Swedenborg was misguided, deceptive, drug-addled and\/or schizophrenic. Supporters, however, note that he was described by contemporaries as pleasant and sensible, that he was a respected member of the Swedish House of Nobles, and that he was an apparently humble man who never tried to start a church and avoided public speaking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, though, Swedenborg\u2019s supporters point to his body of work as its own best defense. His take on the Bible is deep and coherent, and his approach to God and reality is astonishingly modern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put it very briefly, Swedenborg wrote that the Lord is <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/divine-love\/\">love itself<\/a>, perfect and eternal, and that the <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/natural\/\">natural<\/a> world was created as an extension of that love. He wrote that the Lord operates from love into the lives of everyone every moment, trying to get people to accept love while also leaving them free to reject it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything Swedenborg wrote \u2013 more than <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/about\/swedenborg\/swedenborgs-bibliography\/\">30 volumes<\/a> in all \u2013 centers on that idea:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Because nature comes from the Lord\u2019s love, things in the natural world correspond to things in the <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/spiritual\/\">spiritual<\/a> world. This system of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/11360-2\/\">corresp<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/11360-2\/\">ondence<\/a>\u201d is in full force in most books of the Bible, filling them with <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/internal-sense\/\">spiritual <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/internal-sense\/\">meaning<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We humans exist so we can, of our own <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/free-will\/\">free will<\/a>, choose to accept the Lord\u2019s love and return it, fulfilling the Lord\u2019s loving desire for conjunction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We are all both spiritual and natural creatures. When we die physically we \u201cwake up\u201d to the full experience of our spiritual existence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Those who have accepted the Lord\u2019s love and have been loving to others will be together in the spiritual world, creating <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/heaven\/\">heaven<\/a>. Those who have chosen to <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/love-of-self\/\">love themselves<\/a> and hate others will also be together, creating <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/hell\/\">hell<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Lord\u2019s love is expressed through <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/divine-wisdom\/\">perfect wisdom<\/a>, a duality that permeates nature. This includes men and women, which means a husband and wife can become two halves of one soul in a beautiful, loving, passionate <a href=\"http:\/\/wordstudy.newchurch.org\/spiritual-glossary\/conjugial-love\/\">eternal marriage<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0And more!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">This website is intended\u00a0to help people explore what Swedenborg had to say. It is supported by the General Church of the New Jerusalem, which is centered on Swedenborg's writings, and assumes that what Swedenborg wrote is true, but it is open to all who are curious.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In keeping with Swedenborg\u2019s own statements, modern believers downplay his role as author, attributing the ideas to the Lord instead. For this reason they generally refer to Swedenborg\u2019s theological works as \u201cthe Writings,\u201d and some resist the label \u201cSwedenborgian\u201d as placing emphasis on the man rather than the message.<\/p>\n<p>Since \u201cthe Writings\u201d would be an unfamiliar term to new readers, we have elected to use the name \u201cSwedenborg\u201d as a label for those theological works, much as we might use \u201cIsaiah\u201d or \u201cMatthew\u201d to refer to books of the Bible.
