“Sodom” in the Bible, according to Swedenborg, represents the love of self and the love of ruling or dominating others springing from the love of self. This is why it is depicted as such an evil place, and why it was utterly destroyed by God.
This is not, of course, the usual association people have with Sodom; it has long been connected to homosexuality because in Genesis 19 the men of the city try to rape the male angels who were visiting Lot. But if you think about it, it makes sense. Experts regard rape as a crime of violence and domination more than a crime of sexual desire, and the fact that Lot offered his daughters as an alternative indicates that the men of the city were not picky about who they dominated and violated. Their delight was in the domination.
Swedenborg, in fact, says that all stories about adultery in the Bible – from the more mild up to and including the intended homosexual gang rape in Sodom – are actually depictions of the love of self in various forms.
Passages from Swedenborg
Arcana Coelestia (Elliott) n. 2220
2220. That ‘Sodom’ is every evil that stems from self-love is clear from the meaning of ‘Sodom’ in the Word. Although in the next chapter it seems as if Sodom means the evil that consists in the worst form of adultery, nevertheless nothing else is meant by it in the internal sense than evil that stems from self-love. In the Word also the dreadful things that well up out of self-love are represented by various kinds of adultery.
Arcana Coelestia (Elliott) n. 2246
2246. ‘They went towards Sodom’ means concerning the human race which was immersed in such great evil. This is clear from the meaning of ‘Sodom’ as evil that stems from self-love, dealt with above in 2220, and of ‘looking towards the face of Sodom’ as towards the state of the human race, 2219. The reason ‘Sodom’ means the state of the human race which was immersed in such great evil is that Sodom is not used to mean Sodom but all those throughout the world who are governed by self-love; and the description of Sodom represents the state of all who are immersed in that evil, as becomes clear from what follows.
Arcana Coelestia (Elliott) n. 2322
2322. That ‘Sodom’ means the evil, especially those inside the Church, is clear from the meaning of ‘Sodom’ as evil that stems from self-love, dealt with in 2220, 2246. It means therefore people who are governed by such evil. People who understand the Word purely from the sense of the letter may imagine that ‘Sodom’ is used to mean a certain kind of foul behaviour that is totally unnatural, but in the internal sense ‘Sodom’ means evil that springs from self-love. Out of this evil all evils of every kind well up. And the evils that well up from it are in the Word called ‘adulteries’ and are described as such. This will be clear from those places in the Word which will be quoted at the end of this chapter.
Apocalypse Revealed (Rogers) n. 502
502. Which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt. This symbolizes the two hellish loves, namely, a love of ruling springing from a love of self, and a love of holding sway from a conceit in one’s own intelligence, loves which are present in the church where there is not one God and where the Lord is not worshiped, and where people do not live in accordance with the Ten Commandments.
Sodom symbolizes, in the spiritual sense, a love of ruling springing from a love of self, as we shall presently see; and Egypt symbolizes, in the spiritual sense, a love of holding sway from a conceit in one’s own intelligence, as we shall also presently see. So, because these two loves are symbolized, therefore the city is called, spiritually speaking, Sodom and Egypt.
These two loves are present in the church where there is not one God and where the Lord is not worshiped, and where people do not live in accordance with the Ten Commandments, because people are born with these two loves, and they come into them as they grow up. Nor can these loves be removed except by God the Savior and by a life in accordance with His commandments, and God cannot remove them unless people turn to Him, and neither is a life in accordance with His commandments possible unless a person is led by Him. Actually it is possible, but not a life that contains anything of heaven and so of the church.
A life like that is possible only from Him who is life. That the Lord is that life may be seen in John 1:1, 4, 5:26, 6:33-35ff., 11:25, 26, 14:6, 19, and in many other places.
[2] A love of ruling springing from a love of self, and a love of holding sway from a conceit in one’s own intelligence, are the principal loves of all the loves in hell, and so are the origin of all the evils and thus of all the falsities in the church. This is something unknown at the present day. The delights of these loves, which surpass the delights of all the heart’s pleasures, cause it to be unknown, even though they are, spiritually, Sodom and Egypt.
That Sodom is a love of ruling springing from a love of self can be seen from the description of Sodom in Genesis, where we are told that when angels arrived there, the inhabitants tried to forcibly assault them at the house of Lot, and that fire and brimstone rained down on them from heaven (Genesis 19:1ff.). Fire and brimstone symbolize that love, together with its appetites.
Apocalypse Explained (Whitehead) n. 653
653. Which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, signifies through the evils of the love of self and the falsities therefrom. This is evident from the signification of “Sodom,” as being the love of self and evils of every kind therefrom (of which presently); also from the signification of “Egypt,” as being the natural man separated from the spiritual, and falsity of evil of every kind therefrom (of which also presently). Evidently “Sodom and Egypt” mean Jerusalem, and thus the church, in which the goods of love are adulterated and the truths of doctrine are falsified, for it is next said “where also our Lord was crucified;” for the evils of the love of self and the falsities of doctrine are what crucify the Lord, therefore He was crucified by the Jews, because they were in those evils and falsities; but of this more hereafter.
[2] First let it be shown here that “Sodom” signifies in the Word the love of self, and thence every evil; for evils of every kind flow forth from the love of self; since he who loves himself only loves what is his own [proprium], and therefore immerses all things of his will and his understanding in what is his own [proprium], even so that it is impossible for him to be elevated from it to heaven and to the Lord; consequently he sees nothing from the light of heaven, but solely from the light of the world, which light, separated from the light of heaven, is mere darkness in spiritual things, which are the things of heaven and the church; and for this reason also the more a man loves himself the more he despises, yea, denies spiritual things. In consequence also of this the internal spiritual mind, by which man is in the light of heaven, is closed up, and this causes the man to be merely natural, and the merely natural man is inclined to evils of every kind. For the evils into which man is born have their seat in the natural man, and these are removed from him only to the extent in which his interior mind, which receives the light of heaven, is opened; moreover, what is man’s own [proprium] has its seat in the natural man, and what is man’s own [proprium] is nothing but evil.
