Remove, Put Out

As with many verbs, the meaning Swedenborg offers for “remove” in the Bible varies a good bit depending on context. It generally involves a separation of spiritual states, and in most cases specifically refers to a kind of sorting-out process to separate true ideas from false ones.

3993. ‘Removing from it every speckled and spotted member of the flock’ means that everything good and true that is meant by ‘Laban’ and which – when mingled with evil, meant by ‘speckled’, or mingled with falsity, meant by ‘spotted’ – will be separated. This is clear from the meaning of ‘removing’ as separating, and from the meaning of ‘member of the flock’, in this case she-goats and lambs, as goods and truths, dealt with in 1824, 3519.

4544. ‘Remove the gods of the foreigner which are in the midst of you’ means that falsities were to be cast aside. This is clear from the meaning of ‘removing’ as casting aside, and from the meaning of ‘the gods of the foreigner’ as falsities; for in the Word ‘gods’ means truths and in the contrary sense falsities, 4402. Those people were called ‘foreigners’ who were outside the Church and therefore those who were subject to falsities and evils, 2049, 2115; and this explains why ‘the gods of the foreigner’ means falsities.

6371. ‘The sceptre will not be removed from Judah’ means that power and control will not depart from the celestial kingdom. This is clear from the meaning of ‘being removed’ as departing; from the meaning of ‘the sceptre’ as power and control, in particular the power and control of truth from good, dealt with in 4876 (end), for the sceptre is an emblem of royal power and control, and truth is meant by royal power, 1672, 1728, 2015, 2069, 3009, 4575, 6148; and from the representation of’ Judah’ as the celestial kingdom, dealt with above in 6763. From all this it is evident that ‘the sceptre will not be removed from Judah’ means that power and control will not depart from the celestial kingdom.

7392. ‘To remove the frogs from me, and from my people’ means in order that they might not be compelled to use reasonings arising from utter falsities. This is clear from the meaning of ‘removing’ as not being compelled, for what caused the pleading was weariness resulting from their being compelled to use reasonings arising from utter falsities; from the meaning of ‘the frogs’ as reasonings arising from utter falsities, dealt with in 7351, 7352; and from the representation of Pharaoh, and also of the Egyptians, as those who are steeped in falsities and engage in molestation, dealt with often.

9258. ‘And you would cease from removing [it] for him’ means not receiving truth. This is clear from the meaning of ‘ceasing from removing’ as not giving instruction and correcting, at this point not being able to receive instruction, and so not receiving truth since what is said refers to falsity which does not accord with the Church’s good, and that falsity is such. The fact that ‘removing’ has this meaning in the spiritual sense is evident from this consideration, that words are used with reference to the matter under discussion. Thus ‘removing’ is used in the sense of the letter with reference to the burden under which the ass lies, and in the internal sense with reference to the falsity that is not in accord with the Church’s good. In the internal sense therefore not removing from falsity by means of correction is meant, thus also not receiving truth brought about through such correcting or removing. There are falsities which are in accord with the Church’s good, and there are falsities which are not in accord with it. The falsities that are in accord are ones which have good lying hidden within them, and which for that reason can be brought by the good nearer to truths. But the falsities that are not in accord with the Church’s good are ones which have evil lying hidden within them, and which for that reason cannot be brought nearer to truths.

9324. ‘And I will remove sickness from the midst of you’ means protection from falsifications of truth and adulterations of good. This is clear from the meaning of ‘removing from the midst of you’ – when it refers to falsified truths and adulterated forms of good, meant by ‘sickness’ – as protection, for when the Lord protects someone from them He removes them, 9313, [9316;] and from the meaning of ‘sickness’ as falsified truth and adulterated good. These are the sicknesses of spiritual life, for spiritual life receives its existence from and is kept in existence by the truths that belong to faith and the forms of good that belong to love. When these are falsified and perverted, a person is ill; and when they are completely rejected in the heart the person is dead spiritually. Apocalypse Explained (Tansley) n. 811

[6] In Ezekiel:

The prophet was commanded to depart out of the place, and to bring out the vessels of removal through the wall before their eyes, to bring them out under the darkness, and to cover his face that he might not see the earth; and say, “I am your prodigy; even as I have done, so shall it be done to them; into exile, into captivity, they shall go” (xii. 1-12).

The prophet by these things represented the state of the church at that time, which was, that there were no longer any truths remaining that were not destroyed by falsities. For all the prophets represented the church as to doctrine from the Word. His departing out of the place, and bringing out the vessels of removal through the wall under darkness, and covering his face that he might not see the earth, represented the rejection of all the truths of doctrine from the Word. By departing out of the place is signified rejection. By the vessels of removal are signified the truths of doctrine. By the wall, through which he brought them out, is signified the ultimate that encompasses and defends truths; and the ultimate of doctrine is the sense of the letter of the Word, which is called a wall by reason of its containing and including the spiritual sense. By the darkness under which he was to bring them out, are signified falsities. By covering his face that he might not see the earth, is signified the truths of good being no longer seen in the church. Because the prophet represented these things, therefore it is said, “As I have done, so shall it be done to them; into exile and captivity shall they go.” It is therefore evident that to go into exile signifies the dispersion of truth, and that to go into captivity signifies to be taken possession of by falsities.
