Comfort

When the Bible talks about someone being comforted or consoled, it generally means that they are being offered ideas that will help bring them to a more peaceful spiritual state, whether it is a new state or the restoration of one that had been under attack.

This is interesting; we tend to think of comforting someone as an emotional thing, offering our own feelings to help them feel better. But Swedenborg says that the spiritual meaning of “comfort” is actually more intellectual, coming when the person gains new understanding. This makes sense, really — emotional comfort is crucial,  but to actually feel better and move on it is crucial to have an idea of how to cope with our challenges or how to change things to make them better. That calls for good information.

  1. ‘And Isaac was comforted after [the death of] his mother’ means a new state. This becomes clear from the meaning of ‘receiving comfort’ as a new state, for a state of comfort is a new state, which, following the previous one, is meant by ‘after his mother’. The new state is a state of glorification of the Rational; already so as to good, it now became glorified as to truth. The Rational was glorified when it became Divine as regards both good and truth.

  1. ‘And spoke to their heart’ means trust. This is clear from the meaning of ‘speaking to the heart’ as imparting trust, that is to say, that nothing evil would happen to them; for ‘speaking’ means an influx, 1951, 5481, 5797, and ‘the heart’ means the will, 2930, 3888, so that ‘speaking to the heart’ means an influx into the will and trust engendered by it. From this it is also evident that the marriage of truth which is of the understanding and good which is of the will exists in every detail of the Word; for ‘consoling’ has reference to the understanding, and ‘speaking to the heart’ to the will. For the same reason ‘he consoled them’ means hope, since it is an attribute of the understanding received through truth, while ‘he spoke to their heart’ means trust, since it is an attribute of the will received through good. Genuine trust cannot be imparted to any but those with whom the good of charity exists, and genuine hope to none but those with whom the good of faith is present.

  1. ‘To comfort him’ means to provide explanations based on the sense of the letter of the Word. This is clear from the meaning of ‘comforting’ as calming a turbulence of mind with a hope concerning some thing, dealt with in 3610, in this case a turbulence or mourning over lost good and truth. And because this mourning cannot be subdued except by means of explanations based on the Word, and because reference is being made at this point to Jacob’s sons and daughters, who mean those governed by falsities and evils, 4781, 4782, ‘comforting’ means explanations based on the sense of the letter. For the sense of the letter of the Word contains general ideas which, being like vessels, can be filled with truths or else with falsities and so can be given whatever explanation suits one’s own point of view. And because they are general ones they are also obscure compared with other ideas, receiving light from nowhere else than the internal sense. For the internal sense exists in the light of heaven because it is the Word as angels know it, whereas the sense of the letter exists in the light of the world because it is the Word as men know it before they come to the light of heaven received from the Lord, by which light they are then enlightened. From this it is evident that the sense of the letter serves to introduce the simple to the internal sense.

  1. ‘Comfort us from our work and from the toil of our hands that comes from the ground which Jehovah has cursed’ means the doctrine by which what had been corrupted would be restored. This too, in the Lord’s Divine mercy, will be clear from what will come later on. ‘Work’ means their inability to perceive what truth was without toil and distress. ‘The toil of our hands that comes from the ground which Jehovah has cursed’ means their inability to do anything good. Such is the description of Lamech or a vastated Church. ‘The work and the toil of our hands’ is when people must from themselves or the proprium inquire after what truth is and do what is good. And the outcome is ‘the ground which Jehovah has cursed’, that is, nothing but falsity and evil. For the meaning of ‘Jehovah curses’, see 245. ‘To comfort’ however refers to Lamech’s son, or Noah, who means new regeneration, and so a new Church, which was the Ancient Church. This Church or Noah also means peace and the comfort that peace brings, just as the Most Ancient Church is referred to as the seventh day on which the Lord rested; see 84-88.

[11] In Isaiah:

 “Look unto the rock out of which ye were hewn, and to the digging of the pit out of which ye were digged; look unto Abraham, your father, and unto Sarah who bare you; for I have called him only, and I will bless him, and multiply him; for Jehovah will comfort Zion, he will comfort all her waste places, and will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Jehovah” (li. 1-3).

 This also is said of the Lord, and a new church from Him. The Lord as to Divine Truth, and as to the doctrine of truth, is meant by the rock out of which they were hewn, and by the pit out of which they were digged, as may be seen above (n. 411). But the Lord as to the Divine, from which reformation comes, is meant by Abraham to whom they shall look, and to Sarah who bare them; for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the Word, do not mean those persons, but the Lord as to the Divine Itself and the Divine Human, as may be seen in the Arcana Coelestia (n. 1893, 2833, 2836, 3245, 3251, 3305, 3439, 3703, 4615, 6098, 6185, 6276, 6804, 6847). But the heavenly marriage, which is that of Divine Good and Divine Truth, from which all reformation comes, and thus the church, is signified by Abraham, and Sarah, who bare them. Since the Lord is meant by Abraham, it is said, I have called him only, and I will bless him, and I will multiply him,” and “Jehovah will comfortZion, he will comfort all her waste places,” Zion denoting a new church, waste places, truths destroyed, and to comfort, the restoration of the church. That those who will be of that church will acknowledge the Lord, and receive love to Him, and thence wisdom, is signified by His making her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Jehovah, Eden signifying love to the Lord, and garden of Jehovah wisdom therefrom.

[2] That Divine Truth as to power is also signified in other parts of the Word by rods and staves, is evident from the following passages.

 In David:

 “Yea, when I shall walk in the shady valley I will fear no evil, thy rod and thy staff shall comfort me; thou wilt set before me a table in the presence of mine enemies; and thou wilt make fat my head with oil, my cup shall run over” (Psalm xxiii. 4, 5).

 To walk in a shady valley, signifies, in the spiritual sense, an obscure understanding, which does not see truths in their light, Thy rod and thy staff shall comfort me, signifies that spiritual Divine Truth, together with natural Divine Truth, shall protect, because these have power, rod denoting spiritual Divine Truth, staff natural Divine Truth, the two together meaning these as to the power of protecting; for to comfort means to protect. As rod and staff signify Divine truth as to power, these words follow: “Thou wilt set before me a table, thou wilt make fat my head with oil, my cup shall run over,” this signifies spiritual nourishment through Divine Truth; for to set a table signifies to be spiritually nourished, to make fat the head with oil signifies through the good of love, while the cup signifies truth of doctrine from the Word, the cup being used here for wine.
